Choosing the right screwed flanges for your piping system ensures a secure and reliable connection between pipes, valves, and other components. By understanding the different types of threaded flanges, materials, and size and pressure ratings available, you can make an informed decision that meets the specific requirements of your piping system.
What is a threaded flange?
Threaded flange is a non-welded flange with the inner hole of the flange machined into the pipe thread and matched with the pipe with thread to achieve the connection. Threaded flanges, also known as screwed flanges, are widely used in low-pressure piping systems. We recommend not to use threaded flanges in conditions where the pipe temperature changes sharply or where the temperature is higher than 20°C and lower than -45°C to avoid leakage. Considering the structural characteristics of threaded flanges, they are therefore unsuitable for use in flammable/explosive and highly and extremely hazardous situations. Nuclear pressure is small, such as air conditioning, water system, etc., is safe to use.
Advantages and Disadvantages of threaded flanges
Advantages of TH Flanges
1. Easy Installation and Removal
Threaded flanges are a popular choice in many industries due to their easy installation and removal. These flanges can be screwed onto pipes without the need for welding, which simplifies the process and reduces labor costs. This feature makes threaded flanges an ideal solution for temporary connections or systems that require frequent maintenance and inspection.
2. High Pressure Tolerance
Threaded flanges can withstand high pressure, making them suitable for use in high-pressure systems such as steam, water, and gas lines. Their robust design ensures that they can handle the stress and pressure associated with these demanding applications.
3. Versatility
Threaded flanges are compatible with a wide range of pipe materials, including stainless steel, carbon steel, and various alloys. This compatibility allows them to be used in various industries, such as oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and more.
4. Leak-Proof Connections
When properly installed, threaded flanges create leak-proof connections. This ensures the safety and efficiency of the system, minimizing the risk of leaks and potential environmental hazards.
Disadvantages of TH Flanges
1. Limitations in High-Temperature Applications
Threaded flanges have limitations when it comes to high-temperature applications. As the temperature increases, the threads can become weakened, causing potential leaks or system failure. Therefore, they are not recommended for use in systems where extreme temperatures are present.
2. Difficulty in Alignment
Aligning threaded flanges can be challenging, especially for larger pipe sizes. Proper alignment is crucial for the effective sealing of the connection, and any misalignment can lead to leaks or system failure.
3. Potential for Galling
Threaded flanges can be prone to galling, a type of wear that occurs between sliding metal surfaces. Galling can damage the threads, making it difficult to remove or replace the flange. To prevent galling, it’s essential to use proper lubrication and thread materials.
Types of threaded flanges
There are four different types of threaded flanges, including NPT, BSPT, metric, and UN/UNF threaded flanges.

How to Measure a threaded flange?
To accurately measure the dimensions of a threaded flange, follow the steps outlined below:
1. Flange Diameter (O):
Place a measuring tape or ruler across the flange, measuring from one edge to the opposite edge, passing through the center. This is the overall diameter of the flange, which is commonly referred to as ‘O.’
2. Flange Thickness (Q):
Measure the thickness of the flange by placing a measuring tape or caliper perpendicular to the face of the flange. The distance from one face to the other is the flange thickness, denoted as ‘Q.’
3. Hub Diameter at Base (X):
The hub diameter at the base, or ‘X,’ is the diameter of the flange’s neck. Measure the widest part of the flange’s neck using a measuring tape or caliper, ensuring that the tool is perpendicular to the axis of the flange.
4. Raised Face Diameter (RF):
For flanges with a raised face, measure the diameter of the raised face by placing a measuring tape or ruler across the face of the flange. Ensure that the measuring tool passes through the center of the flange and measures from one edge of the raised face to the other.
5. Diameter of Bolt Circle (BC):
The diameter of the bolt circle, or ‘BC,’ is the diameter of the circle that passes through the center of all bolt holes on the flange. To measure this, place a measuring tape or ruler across the bolt holes, passing through the center of the flange, and measure from one bolt hole to the opposite bolt hole.
6. Length Through Hub (L):
The length through the hub, or ‘L,’ is the distance between the flange face and the end of the hub or neck. Measure this length by placing a measuring tape or ruler along the axis of the flange, from the face to the end of the hub or neck.
7. Thread Length (T):
Finally, to measure the thread length or ‘T,’ insert a depth gauge or similar tool into the threaded portion of the flange, measuring the distance from the beginning of the threads to the deepest point.

Dimensions of threaded flanges
Several key dimensions need to be considered when selecting threaded flanges for a piping system. These dimensions include:
- Pressure Ratings: Threaded flanges are available in various pressure ratings, typically designated as Class 150, Class 300, Class 600, etc. The pressure rating determines the flange’s ability to withstand pressure in the connected piping system.
- Size Range: Threaded flanges come in a wide range of sizes to accommodate different pipe diameters. They are commonly available from 1/2″ to 24″ nominal pipe size (NPS), although larger sizes can be custom-made.
- Bolt Circle Diameter: The bolt circle diameter (BCD) is the diameter of the circle formed by the centers of the bolt holes. This dimension is critical for ensuring proper alignment and sealing of the flange connection.
- Number of Bolt Holes: The number of bolt holes in a threaded flange is determined by the flange size and pressure rating. It is crucial to have the correct number of bolt holes to provide adequate clamping force and ensure a leak-free connection.
- Hub Diameter: The hub diameter refers to the diameter of the flange’s raised face, which is the sealing surface that comes into contact with the mating flange. This dimension is essential for proper sealing and maintaining the integrity of the connection.
- Thickness: The thickness of a threaded flange is determined by the flange size, pressure rating, and material. A thicker flange provides greater strength and durability, but also increases weight and cost.

- The thread conforms to ASME B1.20.1 NTP threads as described in Section 10. (The only exceptions are small male and female plain face threaded flanges which use NPSL locknut threads.)
- Class 300 and higher threaded flanges are counter-bored. Threads are chamfered to the counterbore at an angle of 45° (approx).
- Weights are based on manufacturer’s data and are approximate.

Manufacturing Process of Threaded Flanges
Threaded flanges can be produced by forging, casting. We mainly produce flanges by forging, cutting and rolling processes. We will take you through the step-by-step process of manufacturing threaded flanges, from the materials used to the final product.
The following type of flange was selected for the qualification. Using the above introduced materials, flanges were manufactured by hummer die forging.
Flange type: 900lbs. 14B SO RF Sch.80 (φ640 x φ318 x H220)
After the materials are cut, they are heated to the desired temperature. This helps to reduce any stresses in the material and makes it easier to shape the flange.
Step 4: Forging
The flanges were manufactured by closed die forging. The forging was performed by two hummers installed in a domestic forging company according to our order requirements. Table 2 shows the forging conditions and Figure 1 shows the pictures of each forging stage.
The forging operation of F51/F60 needed three heats and F53 needed four heats. After forging, the products were quenched immediately in the water. No defect was found on the surface of the products.

Verification test of the furnace
Before the solution treatment of the flanges, a verification test was carried out in order to confirm the temperature distribution in the furnace. Twenty five (25) dummy flanges were prepared for the test as shown in Figure 2. The measurement result using several thermo couples on the dummy flanges is shown in Figure 3. According to the temperature chart, the maximum temperature difference from target temperature during annealing stage is seven (7) degrees. This means that the furnace is well controlled as a furnace for the solution treatment of stainless steel products.

Solution treatment of the flanges
Solution treatment was made after forging. Heat cycle is shown in the following: 1,050 ℃ x 2 hours → water quenching.
Surface temperature was monitored at three points of the flange during annealing. All temperature ranges were met within 1,050 ± 7℃ which was satisfactory to standard.
Moreover standard requires that the duration from furnace into quenching bath shall be less than 60sec and the water temperature of the bath shall be below 50℃. According to the measurement results during the quenching, it was confirmed that the transferring time was 53sec and the water temperature was kept under 50℃.
Following the solution treatment, a flange of each material was finished by machining.
There was no difficulty when machining.
After finishing, the penetrant testing (PT) was carried out. No surface defect was found.
The following investigations were carried out according to standards:
- 1) Tensile test
- 2) Impact test
- 3) Corrosion test
- 4) Microstructure observation
- 5) Ferrite content
- 6) Hardness (only for F53)
Sampling locations except hardness measurement are indicated in Figure 5.
Position 1 is specified at middle of hub and position 2 at middle of flange respectively.
Tensile test
Tensile test results at room temperature are shown in Table 3. At every position, properties are satisfactory to the requirements of standards.

Impact test
Charpy 2mm V-notch tests were carried out at -46 C. Sampling locations were pos. 1 and pos.2 as shown in Figure 5. At each location, the specimens were sampled in axial and tangential directions.
The results are shown in Table 4 with requirements of standards. All results meet the requirements successfully.
However, in the case of F51/F60 material, the results in axial direction at pos.2 are just above the minimum requirements. Therefore further study will be desired in order to increase the impact toughness in this condition.

Corrosion test
Corrosion tests were carried out according to ASTM G48 Method A- Ferric Chloride Pitting Test using the specimens sampled at pos.1 and pos.2. Testing conditions were 25 °C x 24 hrs for F51/F60 and 50 °C x 24 hrs for F53 respectively. Table 5 shows the size of specimens and the test results of weight loss. As shown in the table, corrosion resistance of these materials are quite satisfactory.

Microstructure
Microstructure observation was made at the location of pos.1 and pos.2. As shown in Figure 6, every structure is austenite and ferrite duplex structure. Secondary austenite is observed in both materials however no intermetallic phase is found.

Table 6 shows the results of ferrite content measurement. AlI of them are between 35 – 55 % which is required by standards. Ferrite content of F53 is less than F51/F60.
